Top Affordable Striped Rugs

We have two clients with young children right now and they both have kitchens with small dining areas that need rugs. This sort of situation is crying out for a colorful, striped rug. A striped rug that is brightly colored and not too expensive is the perfect backdrop for all the things that undoubtedly land on the floor in the kitchen–or any room for that matter–when kids are young. Regardless of who lives in your home, we think striped rugs are classic, fresh, and a great way to cover your floors on a budget. Below is a room designed by Victoria Hagan that we have always admired.
This image, below left, from Williams Sonoma Home was actually what got us thinking about using a colorful stripe rug in our clients’ kitchen eating areas. On the right is a living room by designer Tom Scheerer. Scheerer uses mostly handwoven striped rugs by Woodard & Greenstein–not cheap, but very beautiful and well made! As Tom Scheerer so deftly shows, using a striped rug as the basis for your room is a great anchor when you want to incorporate different patterns in a room. In this living room, he puts floral, plaid, and solid color all on top of a blue and white striped rug; it works because he’s using tints and shades of one color.

After a bit of research, we rounded up what we think are the chicest, most affordable striped rugs, many of them go up to 10 x 14 in size. We recently discovered Plush Rugs and are really impressed with their quality and prices–many of their striped rugs are also made in India.1. Williams Sonoma Home printed capri stripe ($137.99-$149.99) 2. Wayfair Courtisan five seasons south padre ($20-$285.99) 3. Plush Rugs Surya farmhouse stripes ($73-$848) 4. Dash & Albert thyme ticking woven ($30-$414) 5. Plush Rugs Capel Jagges ($198-$1,198) 6. Williams Sonoma Home variegated stripe canvas rug ($29-$199). Do you have a great source for striped rugs? What room do you think they look best in?

I really like striped rugs as well. I have a black and white cotton rug from Crate & Barrel that I’ve been able to toss in the machine, which is nice. Your selections are really lovely; my only concern is upkeep. With the exception of the one polypropylene rug, they all need to be professionally cleaned. I have two young children, and I’d hate to think of how of often I’d need to take one of these lovely (and light-colored) rugs to be cleaned!

This also can fade and shrink depending on how good the cleaner is because most of them are cotton. I have used them to change out wool rugs for summer and they can be very fun and relatively inexpensive.
