weekend excursion: salvaging in red hook, ny

Published on Aug 2nd, 2009 by goodbone

While visiting family in Woodstock, New York this weekend, I stopped into one of nearby Red Hook’s best kept secrets: Hoffman’s Barn Sale (19 Old Farm Rd in Red Hook, NY). From farm tools to bathtubs to records from the 60′s, the hodgepodge selection of old and used was a treasure hunters delight. I was struck by the quality of many of Hoffman’s pieces, as well as their rock bottom prices. I could have furnished and accessorized an entire house out of this one store!
hoffmansbarnBelow, clockwise from top left: vintage tubs, old mantlepieces, a selection of shutters for $9 each, great tin and cast iron kitchenware.
outsideBelow, a pair of painted chairs for $89. I fell in love with the cheerful red color and high backs of these chairs.
rhpaintedchairsMahogany side board, $295. We’re not sure if this piece was designed as a dining room side board or a desk, but its very sophisticated curves caught me eye. Great condition, beautiful wood, and very versatile.
rhdeskCenter table with marble top, $129. This table reminded me of some of the 19th century French pieces we are so found of. I love the neutrality of the color palette, the fluted legs, and the smallish scale of it.
rhroundtable1Below left, Classic Mason and Ball jars, $5 to $8 each. Great for using as flower vases, or for storing buttons and ribbons for craft projects. Below right, cut glass, $46 for the set. It’s rare to see a complete set like this is such good condition. So elegant, these glasses make me think of Gatsby-era parties.
rhaccessoriesThis is a great old painted dresser for $129. We’d leave the paint job as is and replace the knobs with something a little more modern and fun.
rhbluedresserThis chest-of-drawers below, $495, was probably the most beautiful piece I came across at Hoffman’s. It had the most gorgeous plain, knob handles and detailing along the drawers. Very unique.
rhdresserCan you believe how great this place is? Our family friend who recommended it was actually wary about sharing it with the blog–now I can see why! If you live anywhere near Red Hook, NY, or are in the mood for a little road trip and like the thrill of the hunt, I would definitely suggest stopping by Hoffman’s Barn Sale. I’m really looking forward to spending more time in Red Hook, and bringing mom along with me! Do you know of any undiscovered spots like this one?
