For me, the ultimate luxury at the end of the day is a hot bath. From the time Lauren and her little brother, Matt, were old enough to leave unattended, I would disappear into the bath for fifteen minutes after work each day to decompress. Lauren would often follow me into the bathroom once I had settled into my bubble bath. She’d park herself on the bathmat beside me to review her day as I placed a hot wet washcloth on my forehead and listened. To this day, my family members know where they can find me when I’ve had a particularly trying day. It’s for this reason that I’ve always paid close attention to the decoration of the bathroom. Several years ago, I took on the design and renovation of the master bathroom in our 1920′s colonial home. It had been stuck in time beyond words (sorry, no before photo–darn!). So, I decided to gut the space and rebuild my dream bathroom from the ground up.
At the time, I was working on several interior design projects using Waterworks products, so I chose many of the room’s key elements from their collections as I knew I could count on their quality and great service. The floor is a polished 1″ arrowroot cream and white blend hex marble–it really set the tone for the room. I designed the two-sink vanity and had a local carpenter execute my drawings. I wanted the feet of the vanity (see below) to be narrow and somewhat delicate, like a piece of furniture. The counter-top is a honed honeycomb marble–notice that we added a backsplash all around to protect the painted wainscoting. One of my favorite elements of the vanity are the oval, under-mounted porcelain sinks. As for the large bathtub, it was a complete extravagance, but I put it to good use. For contrast, I decided to paint the exterior of the tub a darker tone of beige than the wall color.

1. Waterworks Engine Turned Pewter Clock: A clock like this just feels civilized. At $130, it’s an investment that will stay with you. A great gift, by the way, 2. Walmart Canopy Classic Vintage Collection: My friend Pam turned me on to this line of classic vintage accessories and I can’t tell you how many times I have returned to Walmart at the end of an interior design project to purchase them. They’re absolutely great looking and the best value all around. 3. Gracious Home Bath Accessories: If you’re looking for a really classy, streamlined look. Jonathan Adler designed this collection–love it, 4. Restoration Hardware Clear Glass Pharmacy Bottles: I love the lids on these bottles. You can fill them with guest soaps and all kinds of bath goodies. – S

Oh my goodness what a gorgeous retreat! I love it all, but I have to say my favorite detail is the tile on the floor. I’m such a sucker for tiny hex tile!
P.S. Congrats on the Trad Home spread–looking lovely as usual!
