We love collections of just about anything, but we’re not purists. We’re more interested in how groups of similar objects can be assembled beautifully. I like to keep files of inspirational photographs from magazines and newspapers for decorating inspiration, but Lauren is so much more digitally oriented. Her files are all in iPhoto and Photoshop. Recently, when looking for a launching point for a weekend project, we looked at some of our favorite images from the pages of Martha Stewart Living magazine (thanks, guys). Below, we love the way transferware plates are hung in a free-form formation, so that the arrangement can expand over time.
Below, a creative way to add height to a small, narrow space.
And here, using different patterned plates to create a unique pattern of your own.
Over the years, we’ve amassed quite a few ironstone platters. I’m proud to say most of them were found in barns and garage sales across the country–from Maine to Wisconsin. So, Lauren and I decided to create a montage on this large white wall while showcasing our Kroehler table transformation .
This looks harder than it is. The secret weapon is 3M picture hanging stickers that can hold as much as 10 lbs. Many stylists and designers use this tool instead of traditional picture hangers when trying not to make holes in walls. They are amazing!
1. Measure the space above the piece of furniture you are using as your focal point to figure out about how large a space the collection will need to take up. 2. With the dimensions you have just taken, mark off a square or rectangular space with blue painters’ tape on the floor to create a “frame” for your objects. Play around with how you see them laying out. Lauren and I always have the most fun with this step. 3. Start with the top and center piece, then work you way down and around the wall replicating the formation you just created on the floor–you can even photograph your arrangement if you need a reference. Unless you have the patience to make extremely precise measurements, two people are essential when you’re actually hanging up your collection. 4. Keep going until you’ve got all of the objects on the wall. Sometimes, once you actually start to see things on the wall, you make small adjustments. That’s where these 3M stickies come in handy. Step back and admire! – S & L
I have a collection of Blue Ridge hand painted plates on one wall of our guest bedroom. I agree, it takes some time to get them all hung evenly, but the effect is stunning when it’s all done. Love what you have just done, too!

February 8, 2010 12:32 pmDo you mind sharing the wall and ceiling color names? The combination looks wonderful! What about the trim?
Thank you!
February 8, 2010 12:43 pmI was wondering if you could tell me where the clear lamps that are sitting on the Kroehler tables are from? Im still in search of those vintage turquiose lamps but I am not finding anything – so I might have to move on to another idea.
February 8, 2010 12:44 pmLooks cool, although I think I’d always be a little afraid they would fall!
February 9, 2010 10:03 amWe too, at first, but no kidding, they're still hanging!
February 09 2010 11:42 amlove this look. I just hung two large oval white ones on either side of a mirror in the dining room. I hope to find two more smaller ones to hang underneath. The ones you have would be perfect!
February 9, 2010 12:09 pmI’m trying to locate heavy duty brass hangers that have details on the bottom two exposed ends. I don’t trust the flimsy wire hangers for the platter I wish to hang. Any input would be most helpful.
Also, I like your website and would appreciate monthly updates.
February 14, 2010 12:38 pmI know just what you mean. I once found them in a catalog years ago but have not seen them since. Honestly, I'm all about 3M stickies. They really work!!

February 23, 2010 8:58 pmHi! I just found your wonderful blog and am super inspired! You have such a great style and I can’t wait to get started using some of your ideas! I have a little collection of beautiful platters and would like to put them up. You mentioned the 3M stickies but I’m not exactly sure which of the 3M products you are talking about. Are they called Picture Hanging Strips or do they go by another name? I’m a little bit paranoid about these falling and don’t want to try using another product that isn’t going to work.
Thanks!!!
