Choosing furniture that can work well in more than one room of the home is what good bones, great pieces is all about. And the console table is one of the most ambidextrous pieces. Where would you be without a long narrow console table to drop off your keys, blackberry and purse as you enter and exit your home? This same piece of furniture works equally well when placed behind the sofa in the living room, where it’s the perfect length to hold a pair of decorative lamps, one at either end. A console table also makes an excellent side board in a dining room. Ours often ends up storing the ingredients for upcoming craft or decorating projects, or as a dessert display area during the holidays.
Images clockwise from top left: House Beautiful magazine, Country Living magazine, Apartment Therapy. Here are five of our favorite console tables right now:

1. CB2 Peekaboo Clear Console: Made of .7 inch thick molded acrylic, this transparent console floats in the room. It would even make a terrific bar, $349.
2. Williams Sonoma Home Colonial Console: Inspired by plantation antiques, this table has traditional turnings and a warm, aged finish (48:w x 18″d x 32″h). It’s got a hardwood frame with cherry veneer, $1,450.
3. Room and Board Kitaro: We’re loving the 3-Drawer Console Asian walnut espresso console to tuck away all kinds of stuff (60w x 14d x 30h), $799.
4.Design Within Reach Rubik Console Table: The Rubik Collection (2008) is made with a spare stainless steel base and wood veneer or solid marble tabletop (32″h x 42″ w x 14″d), $750 with the marble top.
5. Jonathan Adler Preston Console Table: Probably the chicest piece made of stamped leather, also available in white (66″w x 15″d x 30″h), $1,950.
Im loving the yellow lamps in the first picture – any idea where they are from?

March 01 2010 16:15 pmCouldn’t agree more! A console table is a must. It is such a versatile piece. I am looking for a company that will do a custom piece like the last one in wrapped grass cloth. Have you seen them?
Best,
Amy Meier
No, but that sounds amazing.
March 01 2010 19:45 pmI’ve had my eye on that peekabo counsel for months now! I love lucite!
March 1, 2010 9:15 pmI love love love the consoles you selected. The plexiglass waterfall has always been a top choice and the concrete topped iron base one from Country living is on my inspiration board. I have a coffee table that is waterfall plexi and it looks fantastic (just keep sharp objects away as it scratches really easily.

March 2, 2010 3:56 pmI love my console piece. I’ve had it many years, it is beautiful – very much like the one you show from Williams Sonoma. It’s in my entry way and on holidays I use it in the dining area. I got it at a tag sale. You girls have a wonderful blog. Thanks for the inspiration. – Lydia

March 03 2010 09:06 amah! i just found your blog and i love it.
my roommate and i are moving to san francisco (a.k.a. going from a spacious house in phoenix to a small apartment in SF) and love the idea of console tables.
we, however, need storage – so we picked up one of those neat bookshelves from IKEA, turned it sideways, and now it serves double purpose: console table behind the couch and sneaky storage/display!
March 4, 2010 9:19 amlove it!
March 04 2010 10:47 amLove them all! We have been in love with the Jonathan Adler one for a while and have waited to pull the trigger — we should!

You know I have a fantastic console table and recently rearranged my living room and no longer have an entry space for the table. Also I am now in need of a coffee table. So I am seriously considering trimming the legs down and converting it into a coffee table. Use and reuse right?
